My 13 Month Old
I thought I was done writing about my baby boy and all the nuances of his birth in Zürich, his milestones and doctor visits, and our journey through mastitis and menopause in his first year. But he hit a few major milestones in his 13th month and I need to write them down to remember. I hope you can bear with me.
Milestones
He is walking! And he got his first tooth! Goodness all at once he turned from our baby into a little toddler. Our girls both walked at a year old and got teeth at 9 months old, but our sweet little boy took his time. And who could blame him as we all hold him and baby him, so what’s the rush?
He is not solely walking, but he takes a few steps every day. Soon enough he will be running around the house and chasing after his sisters. I can’t wait to hear his laugh as he chases them.
And his tooth. He has a sharp little tooth on the bottom that just poked its way out last week. So far he doesn’t seem to be having a tough time with teething. But he does have a bit of a runny nose and a diaper rash that seems to be accompanying the first tooth.
Oh, and my favorite milestone: He used a tiny shopping cart at our local Coop this week. He used it to help him balance as he walked through the store. It was absolutely cute.
Sleeping
He is going to bed at 19:00 and waking at 7:00. He has a nap at 10:00 and another one around 14:00. His lunchtime nap would be earlier, but he really loves when the girls come home for lunch and doesn’t want to miss having lunch with them before going to sleep around 14:00. He sure loves his sisters.
Eating
I’m still feeding him bottles. I know. I’m terrible. The girls weren’t having any bottles at this age, but here we are and I don’t care. He has 3 little bottles of follow-up Bimbosan formula for 12+ months a day. I am going to try to get him to a morning and a night bottle next month. He also loves Bimbosan muesli in the morning. Otherwise he hasn’t met a food he doesn’t like. He loves soup, veggies, fruit, and eggs. And perhaps he has a tiny round Appenzeller Biberli when he’s absolutely perfect to keep him going each day. Bribery is what parenting is all about, am I right? He also loves my oatmeal cookies which I started making again after solely making chocolate chip for the last few years. I forgot how amazing oatmeal cookies are!
Pediatrician
His last appointment was at 12 months and his next appointment is at 15 months. He still hasn’t had a cold or any reason for medication for which I’m so grateful.
My Health
Just as a recap, when our baby was 8 months old, I had a bunch of doctor appointments for myself as I felt like I was falling apart. After many different answers and types of doctors, it was diagnosed that I had low iron and was already in menopause due to very low estrogen. So I took iron for three months and now I am waiting three months to have my levels checked again. And for the low estrogen to the point of it being already in menopause, I am putting an estrogen gel on my stomach once a week. I need to go get my hormones checked again and see if my hormones have returned to normal, or if low estrogen is my new normal. My Gynecologist said it couldn’t be menopause with such a young baby, so we will wait and see.
I am still afraid to fly. I think the fluctuation in my hormones has made me a bit anxious. Our last flight was in May to South Africa and Mauritius to visit family and friends. But we haven’t taken a flight since. No flying in the last 7 months! But we just booked a flight today so I need to get ready to fly again.
Do you have any recommendations for getting over a fear of flying? I’m hoping to find some meditation podcasts or something to download before we get on the plane to listen to while flying. Or maybe I need to learn to knit or cross stitch. Or, I could just take care of three kids on a plane to keep busy!
