A Weekend In Graubünden
A Weekend Away
We spent a wonderful weekend away in Graubünden, the largest Canton of Switzerland. Graubünden is famous for towns such as St. Moritz, Davos, and Chur. With a picnic on the Rhine Gorge Experience open air train of the Rhaetian Railway through the Swiss Grand Canyon, ropes course, and the famous Caumasee, we loved this quick and easy getaway from Zurich.
How We Got There
We took the train on Saturday morning from Zurich to Brigels and stayed at Pradas Resort. When we arrived at the resort, we signed up for a pool time (this is written during the coronavirus and at this time we signed up for a one hour slot to have the pool area to ourselves which was amazing). Next, we played in the outdoor pond, which had a lot of tadpoles.
Taking The Rhine Gorge Experience Train by the Rhaetian Railway
We took a Rhaetian Railway train through the Swiss Grand Canyon (aka: Rheinschlucht or Rhine Gorge). A picnic with all the specialties from Graubünden was waiting for us as we boarded the open air carriage. This picnic can be ordered in advance and picked up at the Chur train station.
There are many ways to explore the Rhine Gorge. We opted for the family friendly and easy open air train, but we saw many people on mountain bike tours, kayak tours, and walking the paths along the well maintained paths on either side of the train.
Also on my Rhaetian Railway bucket list are the Bernina Express and Glacier Express with their breathtaking views of the Alps through bridges, tunnels and famous mountain towns all while onboard a panoramic train.
Where We Stayed
We stayed at Pradas Resort. It is located in Brigels, right on a lake. We had a great family friendly apartment with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, balcony, and it is dog friendly. The kids loved the kid’s club, mini golf, pond filled with tadpoles, and the pool. My favorite part was ordering breakfast delivered to our room from the local bakery on our phone the night before and eating it on Sunday morning in our pajamas. Any chance I get to skip cooking while still being able to be in an apartment with the family is a huge luxury.
What We Did
The Instagram famous turquoise Caumasee has been on my bucket list for the last 7 years. So after our yummy bakery breakfast in our Pradas Resort apartment, we left for Caumasee. We hiked down to the lake and bought entrance tickets for 90 minutes at the restaurant. After our lunch at the restaurant, we got ice creams and took the steep funicular back up to the bus stop before taking the train back to Zurich.
Tip: Next time we visit, we will arrive early in the morning and get a full day ticket. This lake is absolutely beautiful. I would like to sit and enjoy it for an entire day. I would bring a blanket, picnic, swimsuit, and my Kindle. This would be an amazing place to spend the whole day.
