Hadley’s 7th birthday party
We celebrated Hadley’s 7th birthday this afternoon. It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating her 6th birthday. For the last three years we have had her birthday party at home. It’s so simple, easy, and cost-effective!
So this morning, I woke up and made two dozen cupcakes to decorate and a square cake in a glass Pyrex. Also, I used the Coop ready-made cake batter (horrible, I know) and just dumped it in for the cupcakes and the cake. Seriously, so super-duper easy. I frosted the cake and at the last-minute added sushi gummies all over it. So cool and the kids LOVED it. This is the last week of kindergarten for Hadley’s class. Traditionally, they spend the last week of school walking and making a campfire in the forest. This week it has rained nonstop, so it makes for some pretty wet kiddos. Heike and I walked to get Hadley and her 8 friends from school. Poor things had their backpacks, rubber jumpsuits, rain coats, and wellies. We had fun taking pictures while walking home and stopping to pet the neighborhood sheep. When we finally made it home, there was a pile of soaking wet clothes to sort through. By the time I had finished sorting, the girls had already found and put on Hadley’s party dresses. They looked so fun and festive. I quickly turned on Google Play on our Sonos to the Disney Princess channel and they all started dancing. So sweet. One girl saw the face painting kit and volunteered to paint everyone’s faces. When it came time for singing happy birthday, she played it on the piano for us while we sang. She was like a free entertainer. Thank goodness for her.The girls ate lunch and then proceeded to create their own cupcakes. We had frosting and sprinkles and they made such gorgeous little cupcakes to take home. Next we played Pass The Parcel. Heike is serious about this tradition. Then we had a horse coloring contest. Finally we made it to the finale of singing happy birthday, blowing out the candles, eating cake, and opening presents. I can’t believe two years of kindergarten will be over in 48 hours. Two more gorgeous days of walking in the woods with her classmates. Saying goodbye to a fantastic teacher who has taught her Swiss German and German. Ugh, I’m going to cry on Friday. I’m crying now! What do you think about opening presents during the party? These are kid only parties. I think for kids it’s super fun to sit in a circle and do it all together. Before moving to Europe (and the girls were so tiny they were all parent and child parties) I think we had crazy parties at horse farms or gymnastics places and the presents were opened after the party. I liked that Hadley and her friends got to be together while opening presents. I’m not sure if it is common practice to open presents at parties or not. All I know is that I now have a 7 year old! Where has the time gone? Today was pretty magical.
