Milan Girl’s Weekend 2
We just got back from a wonderful girl’s weekend in Milan, my second since moving to Zurich. (Here is my post from my first girl’s weekend to Milan) Milan is a great weekend trip for shopping, eating and history. Currently a 4 hour train ride from Zürich to Milan. In June 2016 the train ride will be less than 3 hours after they open the world’s longest tunnel (35 miles).
Sleep: I would definitely recommend the AirBnB we stayed in. The location is 300m from the Milan Cathedral and fit the three of us perfectly. We pounded the pavement (or cobblestones actually) all day everyday and were hardly in our accommodation, yet it was beautifully clean, airy, safe, with extremely gorgeous high ceilings and everything we needed for a quick weekend away. Plus the location was fantastic as we could get to the Cathedral before the crowds which made our ticket line and climb up quite pleasant and crowd free.
Eat: Pan Brioche was recommended to me by two Instagrammers that I follow, Francesco and Andrea. The location is right next to the Milan Cathedral, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and La Scala. Perfection. The breakfast options are amazing. The smoked salmon bagel was amazing. The brioche bagel was mind bogglingly good. There are so many pastries to choose from, so we picked a bunch to share. The price for three cappuccinos and all the pastries we could eat was only 10 Euros. We couldn’t believe our eyes after what things cost in Zürich. I will definitely be going here next time I’m in Milan. For dinner, we ate at the gorgeous Corso Como 10. We ordered yellow fin tuna, salmon carpaccio, and burrata salad. And then we reordered it all again. Seriously. The sushi type meal was so incredible and I haven’t had good sushi since leaving Seattle. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful, tucked into a tree filled and ivy covered courtyard off a fantastic street next to Eataly. It had a fantastic Californian feel as the menu was super healthy, full of sushi, salads and even fresh juices. A girlfriend recommended Corso Como 10 and I would definitely go back. My mind is still reeling from the gelato at Cioccolati Italiani. There are three chocolate fountains and many gelato flavors to choose from. We each ordered two scoops at the counter and got our receipt. Then, we waited in line and when it was our turn, they asked which chocolate we wanted poured into our cone! YUM! I chose white chocolate melted into my cone with salted chocolate and salted caramel gelato on top. We thought the chocolate would freeze in our cone while we were eating it but the yummy liquid chocolate was so ooey gooey good we had to eat it very carefully. I would definitely go there again as well.
Relax: We stumbled upon a great place for a manicure and pedicure on Sunday and enjoyed the luxury as we only paid 40 Euros! In Zürich, a manicure alone, at a walk in place, is at least 50 francs!
See: The Milan Cathedral is absolutely gorgeous. The 5th largest church in the world and the largest church in Italy. It took 6 centuries to complete. Goodness! Definitely a must see in Milan. To climb to the top, buy a 3 Euro ticket from the ticket booth next to the Cathedral entrance and wander inside the church as well as climb all the way on to the roof and take a look at all from the top. The spires and detail work is absolutely amazing.
Shopping: There is so much shopping in Milan so it just depends which kind you feel like doing. I think Brera is nice and off the beaten Milan Cathedral path. The Golden Triangle and shops near Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II are nice to window shop and walk through, but it gets too hectic to actually shop there. My favorite street to simply window shop in peace is Via della Spiga, but it is very high-end, so I walk it just for the eye candy. The shopping (and food!) near Navigli also has some great eclectic shops off the beaten path.
