My pregnancy Week 25
Week 25 was filled with a stomach bug and self-doubt, or maybe those go together? I think I got food poisoning from frozen fish, but I have never heard of that before so who knows what happened. But goodness I was down and out for a few days. Luckily I’m feeling back to normal now and ready for another week. And the self-doubt was due to many things. I’m a bit home sick not going to see family this summer in Washington State and seeing my friend’s pictures of places I would like to be visiting from childhood. And I think I am still failing at social customs in Zürich, and disappointing wonderful friends who are used to our set schedule. But it’s just this chaotic week, and then it will all be smooth sailing.
School
There are two more weeks until the girls’ school gets out for the summer and the days will be filled with end of year aperos, forest lunches, field trips, and a birthday party. I know, it’s a tough life. But seriously, it’s a bit stressful as the girls’ schedules are a bit wacky this week. My little one will be taking the train with her class for the first time. So exciting! Plus, my oldest is trying out a few new gymnastics places around town and seeing which one would be best for her for the new school year.
Oh, and we are having Hadley’s 8th birthday party this week! Her actual birthday is the last day of school so we are having it a week early since so many people go on holiday. I’m hoping to keep it a simple party at home with her school friends.
Choosing A Hospital
I was chatting with a school mom today and she was telling me how she chose a public hospital in Zürich over a private one and what she said really got me thinking. The only neonatal unit for any delivery complications is the University Hospital Zürich. It’s so interesting as they have first class doctors, but you only see them for the first time when you are delivering your baby. Such a difference from my two experiences in the USA where we knew our OBGYN so well and he was there at both births.
But then I started thinking about the work life balance of the USA doctors versus this public system in Switzerland. So do the OBGYN’s in Zurich public hospitals get to work a normal work shift and go home, not having to wake up in the middle of the night for one patient? Or having to leave a family reunion to go deliver a baby, always having to stay 5 miles or less from the hospital? I would love to hear if Zürich public hospital OBGYN’s have a good work life balance if they deliver whoever’s baby shows up on their shift. It’s so interesting, and so different from my experiences so far.
Public Hospital or Private Hospital
I currently have an OBGYN and we have a choice between a private hospital that is small and is close to our house, but does not have a neonatal unit or a public hospital where my current OBGYN would not come with. My first two pregnancies did not have complications. And so far this pregnancy is going on without an issue.
So I’m left with some questions and a choice between a hospital with my doctor super close to my house as well as my husband’s work, or a public hospital with fantastic doctors and neonatal unit, but not as close to home or work or my doctor. Does the safety of my baby come over the relationship with the doctor? Of course. Would I really chose a hospital because my friends say it’s just like a spa?
I think I need to go take a look at both hospitals and then things will become clearer. My friends have delivered at both hospitals and have had wonderful experiences. I figure everything will be fine as both are great options.
Have you had a baby in Zürich? What is your experience?
