Our 2016 family travel destinations
January. My plan was to finish booking all flights for the year by January. Accomplished. I’ll count that as my New Year’s Resolution and have that box ticked as well. After a busy 2015 traveling and finishing our first full year in Zürich, we have spent a lot of time at home in January. Regrouping, making pancakes, banana bread, almond butter, chocolate chip cookies, painting, and getting back into our routine. On the weekends we go skiing (so much colder than when I was little!). But otherwise we have stayed home, which is new for me. I usually have itchy travel feet and need to constantly see places. Maybe the snow is keeping me inside…But with all this travel planning, spreadsheets, and flight arranging, we have stayed quite content at home.
We are so excited for the new places and even more excited about the old places. We love to travel. And I love to plan our travels even more! I even start planning the next holiday while still on holiday (during Christmas in Zermatt this year, I was debating if next Christmas will a beach holiday or snow. Beach, right?!). It’s tough, but someone has to do it. Travel planning might be my favorite thing. Besides my family, coffee, almond croissants, Netflix, and sleep. So here I have sat. Crafting a 2016 travel spreadsheet full of amazing destinations, flight prices, and hotel prices. I suggested last night that we should just spin the globe, put our finger down, and go to wherever it lands. Best idea, right?
I love the end of the year when all the travel lists come out. My favorites are always the Best Beach and Best Island categories. The most beautiful list this year is definitely this NY Times 2016 Places to Visit Top 50. I could flip through that all day. Take a look at it on an actual full size computer to drool over the pictures. The only thing better than a list? A quiz! The best problem to have is where to travel next. We are so lucky living in the center of Europe within easy reach of all these amazing places. I can’t wait to see some favorites and explore some new ones this year. I was hoping to see Thailand and Japan (maybe another year?). Hadley is dreaming about Japan, China and Antarctica (maybe next year?). Heike wants to go to her Grandma’s farm (check). André wants to see places we have never been (check).
For 2016 we will see Austria, England, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Canada, United States, Spain, France, Germany and finish the year in South Africa. These holidays will all happen over school holidays here in Switzerland. We still have a few school holidays left over for road trips.
Where will you go this year? What holiday are you excited about?
Here are a few pictures of our favorite places we want to visit again in 2016.
