Brunch At Family Friendly Villa Schönegg
We love a good family friendly brunch, and on Saturday we had a wonderfully intimate one at Villa Schönegg. Our girls played in the fantastic playground and watched some scuba divers practicing in Lake Zürich for a while before we walked across the street to the sweet yellow Villa Schönegg. I wish I could move into this little place right on Seestrasse on the border of Rüschlikon and Thalwil.
The first thing I noticed when we walked up was the colorful beer garden with lights strung from the trees. We walked into a small room flooded with light and painted my new favorite color, turquoise. Now I feel the need to paint a wall in our flat the same color. There was one couple in the corner of the restaurant enjoying their brunch, and us. It’s a small room, as this might have been the living room in the villa’s early days.
The owner greeted us and was quietly attentive and wonderful with the girls. At one point he even brought out more toys for them to play with in the play room (it’s a cute little living room or waiting room, but filled with toys). We each ordered our drinks. Cappuccino’s for us and apple juices for the girls. When the owner came back, he started by bringing us all some fresh squeezed orange juice to which my younger daughter said to me, “this is not what I ordered.” Sigh. And then our drinks came.
Next came a four tiered serving tray filled with meats, cheeses, fruits, and salmon on top. Then came the fresh bread and three homemade jams. The girls loved “the pink one” and I’m pretty sure my husband finished the marmalade one. After we demolished the tiered tray, the girls went to play with the toys while we expected our brunch was coming to an end.
And then they brought out the homemade Bircher muesli, which was the best I have ever had. I am not a fan of it as it’s usually too sweet, but this one is super refreshing and healthy tasting. Luckily our girls didn’t eat theirs so we each got to eat another one! Goodness, by this time we were really full. The girls were still playing, and then our eggs came. They were really good and luckily a small portion.
This is such a sweet place for a family brunch. With the play area, the fantastic playground, and Lake Zürich right across the street, we will definitely be coming back soon. The service was perfect, the food was amazingly filling, fresh, with lots of variety. And in the summer it looks like their outdoor garden would be such a great spot to meet up for a meal with friends.
Villa Schönegg has 8 rooms above the restaurant that are super reasonably priced, especially for Zürich. Next time we have friends or family in town I will definitely book them a room online. I kind of want to book myself a room for the night! Then walk downstairs for brunch! I can see this happening.
