Day Trip To Arosa
Day Trip
On Sunday we took the train for a day trip to Arosa for a day of skiing.
We did not book anything ahead of time, just showed up at the train station and bought tickets on our phones on the SBB app. The girls have Junior Cards that we always keep in our wallet. We bought our lift tickets when we arrived in Arosa. The girls rented their skis across the street. We took the gondola up to middle station and had a wonderful day skiing.
The Train Ride
The train ride is 2 hours and 32 minutes from Zürich HB to Arosa.
Packing for a long train ride
We brought one backpack for our day trip. The girls filled it with pistachios, mandarins, apples, and a bunch of granola bars. Besides food, we brought our Tava Adventures Travel Guides for Switzerland, journals, and colored pencils to keep the girls busy on the train. We also played Spot It which has been a big hit, especially with my 6 year old.
Renting Skis
We left the train station at Arosa, walked across the street and rented skis at Luzi Sport. The train station, ski rental, and lift tickets are all within a few steps, so it’s all quite quick and easy. The girls got skis and boots for four hours and it was 14 chf per child.
Buying Lift Tickets
We bought lift tickets to Weisshorn middle station for our first time skiing at Arosa. The middle station is known as the beginner area. I’m glad we took it easy as my younger daughter was a bit rusty on her first run and chair lift. When we skiied after lunch she was going off piste and skiing through the woods and doing jumps. She just needed a bit of a warm up.
Stroller
Our stroller was easy to take with us on the giant gondola up to the Weisshorn middle station. There were people with dogs, sleds, and prams, so there was absolutely no problem bringing a stroller on our day trip.
Skiing
We skiied for four hours including our lunch break. From what I could tell, all the runs we skiied were blue/beginner in this area. My 8 and 6 year old girls were easily able to ski all the runs. It was our first skiing of the season and it was nice and easy with no crowds.
Having Lunch
While the girls and I skiied, my husband and baby bonded at the restaurant next to the middle station gondola. Once we finished skiing, we all had lunch together. We sat in a covered glass sunroom next to a kids play area. It was so warm with the sun shining on us. We ordered a big bowl of alp macaroni to share. There was also wine involved, many cappuccinos, dessert, and a kids menu. I was also surprised that we ordered at our table. Most of the ski restaurants I have been to we order in a line like a cafeteria. It felt quite fancy to have a server.
Next Time
While we were returning the skis, the girls asked if we could come back again next weekend so they could sledge, ice skate, and do the Squirrel Path. My younger daughter was actually quite upset that we were not staying longer. But all was sorted when the ski rental guy gave them candy for the train ride home. There was so much to do in Arosa we really could have spent the whole weekend and not done everything the girls wanted to do. It makes a good excuse to come again. We forgot to give our ski lift tickets back when we finished skiing, so we still have a reason to go back to get our deposit money.
Have you taken your family skiing in Arosa? Where do you usually go for a day trip skiing with your family? Where’s the furthest you have gone for a day of skiing?
Thank you to MySwitzerland for sponsoring this post about our day trip to Arosa.
