My Six Month Old Baby
My Baby!
My baby boy is six months old. He is hitting milestones, eating solids, and bringing our family so much joy. This month he will see two new countries, South Africa and Mauritius, to meet family and friends.
How did time fly by so quickly? We are absolutely obsessed with loving him so much! I can’t remember life without him, and it seems like I just gave birth to him yesterday. I miss him being a newborn baby more than anything, but I love seeing him learning and growing every single day. And the best part? He is such a happy baby and he sleeps like a dream. Without those two last things, this would be a whole different ball game.
Pediatrician
Liam had his six month old check up this month. And the drama with my pediatrician continues. Just slightly, but I could still feel it. I know I take things personally and I can tend to hold a grudge. Anyway, after she weighed and measured him, she consulted her chart. Liam is 7.7kg at 6 months old. When I Google that, he’s average. After looking at the charts she says, “looks like he is almost getting enough to eat now.” Really? Have you looked at his pictures? He’s happy, chubby cheeked, doll wrists, and loving life.
While we are on the subject, am I the only one who misses doctor appointments because where I lived in the USA they called or texted to confirm doctor appointments? Or am I just the worst at creating good reminders on my phone? Any tips for remembering appointments? I wish my phone made an actual alarm that I had to turn off when I have a doctor’s appointment that I scheduled months ago. I sound like an old lady now. Is there a good app or way to do this? I never realized how helpful it is to send a text or phone call to remind me that I have an appointment. We were just relaxing at home on the Sechseläuten holiday Monday when I realized I had missed his appointment! Ugh.
Does your pediatrician text or call to confirm appointments?
Vaccines
Liam only needed a tetanus shot this month. I was so worried about this shot and the aftermath after his four month old vaccines. His sister was there to entertain him and keep him distracted. I had a bottle ready for him as well as his pacifier in case he lost his marbles again. But this time he was absolutely perfect. He also didn’t cry after we left the appointment like he did last time.
Travel
We will fly to South Africa this month for family and friends to meet Liam. Instead of going to Cape Town which we always do, we will go to Mauritius for the first time. I’m bummed we are not going to Cape Town on this visit, as I really love the city so much. But we have not been to Mauritius and I’m very excited explore this country. This will be Liam’s 8th country (Switzerland, UAE, Oman, England, Portugal, Holland, South Africa, Mauritius) at six month’s old.
Flying With An Infant
Flying with an infant has always been my favorite age with kids. They don’t wiggle or try make a run for it yet, they aren’t heavy, they wear a diaper, breastfeeding and bottle feeding gets no complaints, and the list goes on. We ordered a bassinet for Liam to sleep in for the 11 hour flight. We will swaddle him and let the humming sound of the airplane do the rest. (knock on wood) I will pack one spare outfit, pre-portioned formula, cooled boiled water in a thermos, a bottle, pacifiers, diapers, and wipes.
Milestones
He is eating! More on that in a minute. He is grabbing his feet which is pretty much the cutest thing they can do right? He can sit up fully, but I wouldn’t place money on it, so I think he’ll be a seriously sturdy sitter in another week or two. He rolls from side to side now when he wants a better look at his sisters or myself in the living room. Rolling over has happened, but usually he is too busy watching his sisters to make much of an effort.
He loves to laugh and squeal at his sisters. Liam is so smiley and friendly. I hope his personality is always like this. He is a such a happy and content baby.
No teeth yet, and no teething symptoms. He just wears the amber necklace to make a fashion statement.
Eating Solids
We started Liam on solid food on his six month birthday, April 8th. I steamed sweet potatoes, potatoes, and carrots. He was not impressed at all. He loved the spoon though! So far, he is not a fan of purée food. The next day I tried baby led weaning, or what I think it is. I gave him pieces of avocado. Then banana. Then broccoli. He loves all the finger food eating. I’m not sure if he’s eating much of it, or mostly squashing it in his hands, but he can sit for a long time trying to get food into his mouth. It is much more fun for him than me spooning purée into his mouth. He really likes to be in control I guess!
I still feed him formula 5 times a day. 7am, 11:30am, 2:30pm, 5pm, and 6:30pm. Since he started sort of eating solid food, he really isn’t interested in his last bottle of the day. The last two bottles sort of linger on and he is not very interested in finishing them.
Sleeping
Liam has been a rock solid sleeper since he was born. We moved his naps slightly this month and his bedtime. I’m still following (sort of, loosely) The Contented Little Baby Book by Gina Ford. I just open the book to his age, and I check the schedule. Liam now has a 45 minute morning nap at 9am, a two-hour lunch nap at 12:30pm, then he goes to bed around 6:30. He wakes up between 6:45-7am every morning. I am so happy he loves to sleep, because we all love to sleep.
Next Month
In May we have only 12 days of school! We have a few weekend train trips in Switzerland planned. I’m quite excited about the weekends away as one is with a family we traveled to The Netherlands with last month and the other is one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland. This is difficult as there are so many beautiful places in Switzerland.
Also, May is the official opening of the public outdoor pools and lake in Zürich. I can’t wait to get the kids swimming every day after school.
